I am not here to convince you we are great. The three thousand reviews across four platforms do that job for me! What I can do is make that process quicker and more useful.

Our TripAdvisor page is the largest single pool of reviews we have, sitting above 1,200 and growing every week. It is the platform most travelers know, so most guests write their review there if they only write one.
Viator: 5.0 stars across 1,500+ reviews
Our Viator listing has more reviews than any other platform, and since guests book the tour directly there, the reviews tend to be the most recent. The 2025 Viator Experience Award came from this volume of consistent feedback.
Google: 4.9 stars across 180+ reviews
Our Google reviews are the most casual of the four. Locals leave them. Guests who booked direct leave them. They tend to be shorter and blunter than the longer platform reviews, which makes them useful.
GetYourGuide: 4.9 stars across 170+ reviews
Our GetYourGuide listing draws a slightly different crowd, often Europeans booking Kyoto as part of a wider Japan trip. The tone is different from TripAdvisor but the pattern is the same.
What Guests Mention Most Often
When you read enough reviews, patterns emerge. These four come up more consistently than anything else across all four platforms.
"Things we'd never have found alone"
This phrase turns up in more reviews than I can count. It is the single most repeated comment across all four platforms. It is also exactly what we set out to do. The whole point of a NORU tour is getting you into the hidden corners of Kyoto rather than the same five postcards every other group visits.
How the e-bikes change everything
A real pattern in reviews from older guests and mixed-fitness groups is that the e-bikes made the tour possible at all. Grandparents riding with teenagers. Older couples climbing hills that would have ended a regular bike ride in the first hour. The electric-assist system flattens the fitness gap, which is why a group of eight people with different ages and different abilities can stay together and enjoy the same day.
The small group format
Reviews use phrases like "didn't feel like a tour" or "felt like riding with friends." That is why we keep our tour groups small. The Reviews That Matter Most
Star averages are a starting point, not a conclusion. Here is how I would read NORU reviews if I were the one making the decision.
Recent reviews matter more than old ones
Anything more than 18 months old reflects a version of our tours that no longer exists. The April 2026 Blue Ticket law changed the pre-ride briefing, the route choices near pedestrianized zones, and the whole conversation around cycling legally in Kyoto. Reviews from 2024 or earlier are still useful for the general feel, but for operational details, filter by date and read the recent ones first.
What do our critics say?
The honest patterns in our more critical reviews come down to three things. The pace is slow for serious cyclists. We ride as a group, we stop often, and we take time to look at things. If you came for a workout, this is not the right tour. We also skip some famous spots by design.
Kinkaku-ji is not on our current routes. Fushimi Inari is not either. We tell guests to visit those separately. Some guests are surprised by that and say so in their reviews. And lunch is not pre-arranged. We stop at a local spot where you can pick something up, but the meal is on you. Some guests expect it to be included and it is not. They are deliberate choices that suit the kind of tour we run, and they are honest things to know before you decide.
Look for reviewers like you
A solo backpacker and a family of five can both give a tour five stars and describe completely different days. Find the reviews from people who match your situation. Couples in their sixties notice different things from twenty-somethings on a first Japan trip. Both might be right. Viator's Experience Awards go to operators with consistent five-star reviews across a high volume of bookings over time. It is a consistency award, not a snapshot. You cannot buy it, and you cannot fake the volume of reviews required to earn it. We received it in 2025.
Licensed Kyoto tour operator
We are registered with the Kyoto Prefectural Governor under 京都府知事登録旅行業第2-1065号. That is a real legal registration, not a self-styled credential. A significant number of tour operators in Kyoto run without it. It is worth checking before you book any tour, ours or anyone else's.
Twenty years here and five thousand riders
I have lived in Kyoto for over twenty years. NORU has taken more than five thousand guests through the city. The reviews sit on top of that base. A platform with twenty reviews and a perfect score tells you far less than a platform with two thousand reviews and a 4.9.

Volume and consistency, over years of small-group tours. We cap the standard tours at eight riders, which means every guest gets attention from the guide. Small groups produce better days, and better days produce honest five-star reviews. That said, we do not have only five-star reviews. Read the lower-rated ones too. They tell you the most.
